Color coded index cards can be used for sentence starters or frames. The teacher can write the sentence frames (different ones on each side), then model how to use the cards. both orally and when giving a written answer.
Students can practice giving their opinion orally at first. You will be surprised how incredibly easy will be for them to provide answers using the sentence starters and how much they’ll like doing this orally. You can add quick opinion writing activities or drills to your writer’s workshop schedule, and you will notice that after several oral attempts, students will begin being more comfortable providing their opinion in writing.
