A visual timer is a 60 minute analog countdown clock with a visible display of a colored-disk that disappears in clockwise direction as time expires. There is an audio signal that marks the expiration of time, but this alarm sound option can be turned off for sound-sensitive environments. Recommended by Autism and ADHD experts, Time Timer is one of the most popular visual timers available on the market. Time Timers come in 3, 8, and 12 inch sizes, perfect for the classroom, in your home or on the go.
WHY SHOULD YOU USE A VISUAL TIMER?
The visual timer helps students to (1) stay on task, (2) assists with organization and (3) helps improve concentration. They also (4) assist with transitions from preferred activities to non-preferred ones and (5) help managing activities (like calming down, cleaning up, academic work, etc). Teaching the concept of time can be difficult, but with the help of a visual timer, the child can visually see how fast the timer is going and how much time is left before the activity is over. This way when they ask you “How much time is left?”, you can show them the timer and they can get a visual representation of it.
When working with a child that needs to complete an activity that they would prefer not to do, but need to (such as Math or brushing teeth) the timer can be set for a certain amount of time that they need to work on that skill for. This will give them a clear explanation of what is expected of them for time to work on that specific skill. They still may not like to complete that skill, but they will understand how long they need to participate before they can stop and/or choose a preferred activity.
