READING COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES

Reading comprehension strategies is a term that refers to explicit instructional strategies that help students translate print to meaning.

ANCHOR CHARTS

Anchor charts are not only great visual supports in teaching students, but they can also help with remediation. They can be used for any subject and any grade level.

DECODING STRATEGIES

Decoding is the process of translating print into speech by rapidly matching a letter or combination of letters (graphemes) to their sounds (phonemes) and recognizing the patterns that make syllables and words. Some students are able to do this automatically, some need to be explicitly and systematically taught decoding strategies in order to become proficient readers.

READING GUIDES

Reading guides are low tech assisstive technology devices that help students navigate reading material, and stay focused and engaged. They take many forms, from highlight strips to reading rules and pointers. They help not only the students with vision tracking issues, but also dyslexic students and students who can’t focus when a lot of text is presented to them at once.

RETELLING STRATEGIES

Retelling is a strategy used to determine how well a student has comprehended a specific story or content. Sketching, as a retelling strategy, has multiple benefits especially for students who struggle with reading comprehension.

SNUGGLE BOOKS

Reading together is a fun-filled experience for a child and a parent. It’s also one of the most important things a parent can do to help a child learn and practice reading.
